A work of love

Christians refer to the period from Ash Wednesday to Easter as Lent or Eastertide. During these 40 days of fasting, many of us abstain from certain foods, stimulants, or perhaps from using media such as television or the internet. While simple abstinence without a spiritual dimension might be healthy for body and soul, it certainly would not be the goal of Christian fasting in the context of faith. The goal of fasting is to pursue a path of repentance and conversion through abstinence and concentration on essentials, accompanied by prayer.

However, abstinence from consumption also has a social component. The savings achieved through abstinence are not meant to be hoarded and thrown away. Christian fasting also includes acts of charity.
